Why the Bible?

Whether you’re a non-believer, a new Christian or a veteran to the faith in Jesus Christ, odds are that a series of questions has run through your mind at some point: Why trust the Bible? What if Christians are wrong? What if Muslims / Buddhists / Hindus / Wiccans / Orthodox Jews / etc. are right and Christians are being deceived? What if the Quran or any of the other religious texts are true and not the Bible?  I will admit to asking myself these same questions and I believe it is an attack by the devil to deceive and pull away from the belief in the one true God. You could always make the argument that 2 Timothy 3:16 says “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable” but does that really prove it in your mind? What if other books say they are also inspired by God? Does it make them true? Absolutely not. After reading the following examples from the Bible, it should be plain to see that the Bible was divinely inspired by the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and no amount of human coordination could have ever (or will ever) create a more true Word.

The Plan of Salvation

Thousands of years before Jesus was born, God’s plan for salvation had already been put into place. Have you ever read Genesis chapter 5 and wonder why it lists the generations from Adam, the first man, to Noah and his sons? Although interesting to see how many years each person lived, why would we be interested in some of these other people who aren’t in popular scenarios in the Bible? Because God had a reason for each person…

It is a common thing today for parents to look up the meanings of the names they want to call their children before they are born. Adam didn’t have access to books or the internet when he named his son Seth. Seth didn’t have access to those things either when he named his son Enos. What they did have access to was God who directed them for a very specific reason. Look at the Hebrew meanings of the names from Adam to Noah:

Adam – Man

Seth – Appointed

Enos – Mortal

Kenan – Sorrow

Mahalalel – The Blessed God

Jared – Come Down

Enoch – Teacher/teaching

Methuselah – His Death Will Bring

Lamech – Despair/despairing

Noah – Rest

If you put the meaning of those names in order in a sentence it would read “Man is appointed mortal sorrow. The blessed God shall come down teaching. His death will bring the despairing rest.” Over the span of several hundred years, no mortal could ever put together a prophecy that would take place thousands of years later: the prophecy of God sending His only Son to earth as a human to teach the Gospel and die for our sins. Only the one true God could do this! God hid the Gospel in the first 10 generations of the Bible.

It’s not just the names where God hid a secret. In Genesis chapters 5 and 11 it also tells you exactly what age each person was when they had their sons. Adding those up:

Adam was 130 when Seth was born.

Seth was 105 when Enosh was born.

Enosh was 90 when Kenan was born.

Kenan was 70 when Mahalalel was born.

Mahalalel was 65 when Jared was born.

Jared was 162 when Enoch was born.

Enoch was 65 when Methuselah was born.

Methuselah was 187 when Lamech was born.

Lamech was 182 when Noah was born.

Noah was 500 when Shem, Ham and Japheth were born.

Pausing here to add it up you have 1,556 years. The lineage continues in Genesis 11:10 after the flood.

(Add in 2, years after the great flood – Genesis 11:10)

Shem was 100 when Arphaxad was born.

Arphaxad was 35 when Salah was born.

Salah was 30 when Eber was born.

Eber was 34 when Peleg was born.

Peleg was 30 when Reu was born.

Reu was 32 when Serug was born.

Serug was 30 when Nahor was born.

Nahor was 29 when Terah was born.

Terah was 70 when Abram was born.

Adding up the lineage from Shem to Abram you have 392 years.

Adam to Noah  1,556

Shem to Abram  392

Total of 1,948 years

Abram, who later became Abraham, was the founding father of the Jewish Nation of Israel who, not so coincidentally, became a nation in 1948.

To show how amazing God is, from Jesus (who is also called the second Adam) to Israel being reborn as a nation, it is 1,948 years. God hid his prophecy about the rebirth of Israel in his divinely inspired Word. There is no way man could have concocted such a plan.

Hidden Messages Using Numbers

It has been revealed that God’s use of numbers in the Bible mean much more than what we can see from casual reading. For instance 6 has been shown to be the number of man, 7 is the number of completion, 8 is the number of new beginnings, etc. Patterns and examples of these, and many other numbers, can be found all throughout the Bible. It was discovered in the Hebrew version of the Torah, the first 5 books of the Bible, that by skipping certain number combinations, you can reveal hidden messages. This is but one example.

In the Book of Genesis, if you take the first “T” and count 49 (7 squared) letters, the next letter would be “O”. Count another 49 letters and you have “R”. Count another 49 and you have “H”. TORH is a common translation for Torah.

If you use the same pattern in Exodus, you come to the same word, TORH.

This does not repeat in the 3rd book, Leviticus, but you will see why.

The pattern continues in the 4th book, Numbers, except this time the word is backwards. It spells HROT.

The same backwards pattern continues in the last book of the Torah, Deuteronomy.

Back to the book of Leviticus. It was discovered that by using a pattern of 7, instead of 49, you come up with YHWH, the sacred name of God.

Putting this into an amazing image you have:

Genesis    Exodus    Leviticus   Numbers   Deuteronomy

TORH       TORH       YHWH        HROT       HROT

—>             —>                         <—           <—

It would appear that the Torah always points to the sacred name of God. Again, there is no way man could have planned this in 5 books by different authors over thousands of years. The only explanation is that the Bible is inspired by God. If an all knowing God can put together such amazing patterns in His inspired Word, why would you not believe everything within its pages, especially His plan of salvation for us?

The Mystery Of Gematria

Gematria (where we get our word geometry)  is not something well known to those outside the Jewish faith. Gematria is simply taking the letters of the ancient Hebrew or Greek alphabet (as they had no numbering system) and assigning them a numerical value. As you can see in the image above, the number 1 is associated with the letter Alpha, 2 with Beta, 3 with Gamma, etc. If you’re not familiar on where this is used in the Bible, refer to Revelation 13: 19 “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.” This is from the King James Version and most newer revisions of the Bible will do the math and calculate it to 666. This was done using gematria.

Now that we understand how gematria works, we can apply it and see how God incorporates it. If you take the 3 titles of Christ (Lord, Jesus, Christ) used in the New Testament and apply gematria you come up with an interesting number.

The number 3168 is connected to all of creation. Let’s start with the 12 tribes of Israel. If you take the Hebrew names for the tribes of Israel and translate it to its value in gematria:

Asher – 501

Benjamin – 152

Dan – 55

Gad – 8

Issachar – 830

Joseph – 156

Judah – 30

Levi – 46

Naphtali – 570

Rueben – 259

Simeon – 466

Zebulon – 95

The 12 sons of Jacob total to 3,168… the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Coincidence? I think not.

Moving on to the next example, the amount of atmosphere that contains the oxygen that we breath is 60 miles from the ground to the sky. No, we cannot breath 60 miles above our ground level, but oxygen is prevalent up to that point. Since 1 mile equals 5,280 feet, 60 x 5,280 is 316,800 feet. If you drop the zeros because they have no value in gematria, that’s 3,168. This brings all new meaning to Acts 17:25 which says “…He himself gives life and breath to everything…” We are breathing Jesus!

What about the human body? It is a medical fact that our bodies have 60,000 miles of blood vessels throughout our body. If you translate those miles into feet (60,000 x 5,280), you have 316,800,000 feet of blood vessels. Drop the zeros and we are back to 3,168. Jesus’ blood is flowing though our bodies. We are not our own but we belong to Him!

Here’s another interesting fact about the human body. A family of proteins called laminin are an important part in the structural scaffolding of basement membranes in almost every animal species. They help hold everything together in the cells. They act as a glue that holds one cell to the other. The arms of the laminin are what hold things together. Look familiar?

All of these things are not mere coincidence. God created man in His image and it has nothing to do with evolution. Sheer coincidence could not cause every one of these things to happen. Let’s look at a few more examples to show that God knew exactly what He was doing when he created man. The shape of certain foods reveal the part of the body that they impact:

Carrots, when cut, resemble the human eye. It is a well known fact that the beta carotene  found in carrots are good for the eyes.

The tomato has 4 chambers and is red. Medical doctors know that if you want to have a healthy heart, eat tomatoes. They reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease.

Grapes are also good for the heart and actually take the shape of the human heart when clustered on a vine. Grapes help prevent heart disease and diabetes.

The omega-3s in walnuts are good for the brain since the brain needs high-quality structural fat to perform.

Kidney beans, while also resembling a human kidney, are also good for overall health while maintaining proper kidney function.

Celery, similar to the shape of bones, is good for the bones because bones and celery both contain 23% sodium. Without sodium, the body pulls it from the bones and you can become weak.

Avacados, pears and eggplants are similar to the shape of the womb of  a female. It is a fact that avacados are one of the best things to eat if you have issues with that general area.

Sweet potatoes resemble the shape of our pancreas and help in stabilizing blood sugar levels and lowering insulin resistance.

Once again, could all this have come through evolution? Did the parts of our bodies somehow get a glimpse of the specific foods that help them operate and somehow morph into those shapes? It takes MUCH more faith in the theory of evolution than it does to believe in a true God who created us with His own hands. That God is the God of the Bible, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and the same God who sent His Son to die for our sins. The other so called religions who worship something else cannot come close to producing the kind of evidence that our living God has.  Now is the time to believe and put your trust in God that we have been saved by faith.
