Hawaii County declares state of emergency over dengue

Move over, Zika. Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi declared a state of emergency on Big Island over dengue fever, a virus that’s transferred by mosquitoes – and as part of the government response, the local landfill has announced it would start accepting tires.

“The state of emergency will suspend the law that prohibits tires being accepted at county landfills as a means of effectively controlling and eliminating the dengue fever virus,” Big Island Now reported.

Tires collect water and serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
